KY Green Team

A Message from First Lady Jane Beshear about the KY Green Team…
WEBSITE

As Kentucky’s First Family, Steve and I are taking some simple steps at home in the Governor’s Mansion to help reduce our impact on the environment while saving money at the same time.

We are asking every Kentuckian to join us in making small changes in your own home because together our efforts can make a real difference.

In events across the state, and at greenteam.ky.gov, we will highlight many low-cost measures and simple practices we have implemented at the mansion that may be employed by most homeowners, such as installing low-flow shower heads and energy-efficient light bulbs, washing clothes in cold or warm water, and turning off electronic devices and unplugging them when not in use. I am proud to say that we achieved a goal outlined during the launch of the Green Team on Earth Day 2008 to reduce energy consumption in the Governor’s Mansion by 15% by 2010.

A Green Team project I’m especially excited about is the Governor’s Garden. Inspired by the White House’s commitment to homegrown produce and a desire to raise “green” awareness, we have joined with leaders from the Finance and Administration Cabinet, Western Hills High School, Kentucky Proud, and Access Food Pantry to develop and grow the first ever Governor’s Garden. The majority of the produce raised in the Governor’s Garden will be donated to Access Soup Kitchen, enabling many who often lack access to fresh fruits and vegetables to have healthy, nutritious meals.

Steve and I hope you will join us by signing up at greenteam.ky.gov. We thank you, but more importantly, your children and grandchildren will thank you for preserving Kentucky’s natural beauty for many generations to come.

Sincerely,

Jane Beshear
First Lady of Kentucky
